Corneal Refractive Therapy (CRT) in Austin

CRT

Whether you call it corneal refractive therapy or orthokeratology, CRT is a mouthful! Luckily, it is a simple and painless procedure that can correct nearsightedness and mild astigmatism. How does CRT work, and is it a good option for you?

Corneal refractive therapy is often recommended for those who would benefit from LASIK but who either cannot undergo the procedure because of age, eye dryness, cost, or who have apprehensions about the procedure and its potential complications. While LASIK is very safe and very effective, it is not for everyone. CRT provides a nonsurgical alternative. You simply wear a specially designed gas-permeable contact lens while you are sleeping. This works to reshape the cornea. During the day, you can see more clearly without eyewear or contact lenses.

CRT is often used by those who do not want to wear glasses or contacts during the day because of dry eyes, allergies, exposure to dusty environment, extensive computer usage, or involvement in sports and activities where glasses are not practical.

Imagine being able to improve your vision while you sleep!  It is possible with CRT.  In just two weeks, your cornea can be reshaped sufficiently to improve vision significantly.  At first, you may notice some glare or a halo effect that should be reduced in time.  When CRT has helped you reach the prescription that is right for you, you will need to wear contact lenses at night or for periods during the day to maintain the correction.

You may be wondering if CRT is as effective as LASIK.  An FDA study found that 93 percent of CRT patients achieved vision of 20/32 or better, and 67 percent of patients were able to improve their eyesight to 20/20 or better.  Similar studies have showed overwhelmingly positive results.

CRT is ideal for those who want to reduce their dependency on glasses or contact lenses but for whom LASIK is not a viable option.  Is it right for you?  The skilled physicians at Tech Ridge Vision will help answer that question, as well as any others you have about your vision and treatment options.  We are one of the very few providers in Texas to offer CRT to our patients; take advantage and improve your eyesight today.  Or, more accurately, tonight!
