Children's Eye Exams in Austin, TX
How important are eye exams for children? Consider that 80 percent of the material taught in school is presented in visual form. Identifying and managing vision problems early can help children in school, sports and social interactions. Identifying problems early can also preserve sight and correct issues that could cause irreversible damage.
When should you bring your child in for an exam, and does a child's exam differ much from that which an adult receives?
Children as young as six months old may be seen for their first eye exam. The details of how your child’s exam will be conducted depending on age. Generally the examination will cover vision testing, eye alignment testing, eye health evaluation and determining whether eyeglasses are required.
Some children are able to have periodic screenings at school or at the pediatrician’s office and are reported to have perfect vision. However, 10 percent of preschool-aged children and 25 percent of school-aged children have problems with their vision, and many of these issues go undetected by screenings. In other words, just because the screening tells you your child’s eyes are OK, there may be an issue that needs to be addressed. A comprehensive exam by an optometrist will be able to identify any issues and allow you to take corrective measures before sight is permanently impaired.
