Comprehensive Eye Health Exam

comprehensiveeyehealthYour eye health, and that of your family, is important to us! Regardless of age or physical health, a routine eye examination is recommended at least once per year to evaluate your need for vision correction with glasses or contacts, assess how your eyes work together as a team and check for early signs of eye disease. Many eye and vision problems have no obvious signs or symptoms, so patients are commonly unaware that problems exist. Early diagnosis and treatment of eye and vision problems are important for maintaining good vision and eye health, and when possible, preventing vision loss.

Contact Lenses

contactlensesMany people prefer their appearance without glasses. Contact lenses can achieve this without irreversible refractive surgery. Contacts allow for a wide field of unobstructed vision and increased comfort during sports and other recreations, may be used to enhance your appearance cosmetically, and are even frequently used for the treatment of certain eye conditions. Today, there are more convenient and healthy contact lens options than ever to satisfy a wider range of patients. In the United States, contact lenses are a prescription item, just like pharmaceuticals. By law, and for your safety, contact lenses must be properly fitted by an eye doctor. Discuss with your doctor which lens options are right for you.

Laser-assisted in-situ keratomileusis (LASIK) and other laser refractive procedures are more popular and, thanks to continued advancements in technology, more successful than ever. These procedures alter the shape of the cornea so that light rays are better focused onto the retina, improving clarity of vision. With today’s breakthrough technology in blade-free and wavefront-guided, custom LASIK, almost anyone that suffers from nearsightedness, farsightedness, or astigmatism can reduce or eliminate their dependence on glasses or contacts through refractive surgery. At Tech Ridge Vision, your doctor will provide honest and thorough pre-procedural evaluations to determine if you are a good candidate for surgery based on your age, refractive stability, corneal shape, corneal thickness, and ocular and systemic health. Your doctor will discuss with you which refractive procedure may be best for you, what you would experience during the procedure and expectations for vision after surgery. Your doctor will also provide you with comprehensive post-surgical care to ensure that you enjoy your newly improved vision.

Corneal Refractive Therapy (CRT)/Orthokeratology

cornealCRT (also referred to as corneal reshaping, ortho-keratology, and ortho-k) is a non-surgical procedure that involves wearing a specially designed gas-permeable contact lens while sleeping to reshape the cornea in order to correct nearsightedness and mild astigmatism, allowing you to see clearly during the day without wearing any correction. The painless procedure is a good alternative to LASIK for those patients that are afraid of potential complications of surgery, or are not good candidates due to dryness, age, or expense. CRT is an excellent option for patients that feel uncomfortable in daytime contact lens wear because of dry eyes, allergies, or dusty environments, as well as for those that are active in sports or outdoor activities in which contacts and glasses become bothersome. Studies have shown that these specially designed lenses may aid in preventing or lessening the amount of nearsightedness in children and teens. Tech Ridge Vision remains one of the few eye care practices in Austin, as well as in Texas, which is certified to provide this service to its patients.

Children’s Eye Exams

childreneyeexamsEye exams for children are extremely important in ensuring normal vision development as well as academic achievement, given that over 80 percent of what a child learns in school is presented visually. Vision is closely related to the learning process and those children who have difficulty seeing or interpreting what they see may perform poorly at school or exhibit reading or learning disabilities. Although vision screenings by a school nurse, pediatrician, or other health care provider may be helpful in determining the need to have your child’s eyes checked, it does not replace a comprehensive evaluation by a licensed eye doctor. Approximately 10 percent of pre-schoolers and 25 percent of school-aged children have vision problems, many of which may not be discovered at a vision screening. The American Optometric Association recommends infants have their first eye exam at around 6 months, then again around age 3, and again as they begin school. Consult with your eye doctor for guidance on when your child should have an exam.

Treatment of Eye Disease

At Tech Ridge Vision, our doctor is licensed and board certified to diagnose, monitor and treat many eye diseases. These range from glaucoma, macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, and cataracts to such conditions as dry eye syndrome, ocular allergies, and computer vision syndrome. We have the most advanced diagnostic technology available, and may perform in-office testing when needed in order to best manage the ocular health of our patients. So that we can ensure the best possible outcomes for our patients’ conditions, treatment may consist of prescribing medications, performing minor surgical procedures, providing pre-operative and post-operative care, and co-managing with other physicians.

Emergencies, Eye Infections, Injuries

Our doctor provides emergency care to those who have suffered an injury or infection. Please call or visit our office during business hours and we will work with you to schedule an examination as soon as possible. If you have experienced a chemical burn, you should immediately rinse your eye thoroughly with a constant stream of tap water or saline eyewash for fifteen minutes. In the event that our office is closed when you have suffered an injury, and you feel that you cannot wait until our office is open to be seen, you should seek care at a hospital or urgent care clinic.
